How to choose a dash camera for your car

Home » News »

Dash cameras for cars are as important as fire extinguishers or first-aid kits. At the right time, they can protect you in case of a traffic infraction. Records may defend your rightness in court and eliminate many potential problems. In this guide, we will talk about the most important aspect of a dash camera.

Housing

Most DVRs have a lens, matrix, processor, and a memory stick combined in a single unit. However, there are models that allow installing the camera on the windshield and hiding the system unit in the glove box.

Screen

Dash cameras may have their own screen or use external displays (via WI-FI or wires). The screen size and the method of data transfer should not become a decisive factor of choice since you will always be able to view your recordings on a larger display of your personal computer or on a TV screen.

Lens

One of the vital parts of a DVR is its lens, as in any other optical device. A good lens can be detected by the big size and a bluish tint. Usually, it means that the device lens have an antireflection layer.

As to the viewing angle, the optimal range is 120-140 degrees. If it is smaller, the lens will not be able to capture everything you need. If it is bigger, the image will be distorted.

Matrix

The video quality directly depends on the matrix resolution. A good DVR has to offer at least a Full HD resolution (1920×1080) or even higher. If you want to get a high-quality image, buy a device with at least a 3-megapixel matrix.

Memory

The dash camera may have several channels for video and audio recording. As a rule, it uses a removable memory stick for video storage (a micro-SD card or a hard-drive). The built-in memory of a DVR is only used as an auxiliary tool to save the most important files.

Mounting

Some models of dash cameras сan be mounted discreetly. You can install it behind the rear view mirror or even replace it entirely with a mirror with built-in DVR. Such models are often used in combination with a remote camera installed on the rear window. In addition to the primal dash camera functions, such devices serve as cheap parking systems.
